Three Ways To Maintain Your Garage Door

Blog

While you can hire a professional to service your garage door from time to time, there are some things that you can do on your own. Here are three ways that you could maintain your garage door over the years.

Apply Lubricant To Moving Parts

Anything moving parts made out of metal should be lubricated. When it comes to your garage door, lubrication makes the parts move much easier and limit the possibility that you'll need an emergency repair done. You can use a lubricant that applies with a spray can, like WD-40, and apply it directly to hinges and springs to keep them in great shape.

However, the tracks of an overhead garage door should use a lithium-based lubricant on them to keep parts moving. This is because these lubricants will not become sticky and collect dust, which will actually make movement worse for the casters as the roll over the track. The horizontal surface of the tracks also makes it easier for dust to collect on them, so any preventative steps can go a long way with ensuring smooth garage door operation.

Replace Weatherstripping

Take a look at the weatherstripping along the bottom of the garage door. The best way to do this is by opening the door and getting a close look at that bottom edge. Does the piece of weatherstripping look like it is split in places? If so, it's probably letting a lot of air into your garage without you knowing it.

Thankfully, your local home improvement store should sell a kit for replacement weatherstripping. It will include everything that you need to get the job done. Simply remove the old weatherstripping, cut a new weather strip to the proper length, and slide it into place.

Repair Dents

Does your garage door look a bit banged up from years of abuse? This can easily happen if you have a basketball hoop installed above the garage, or you have a teen driver that parked a little too close one day. If the door is made out of aluminum, any chips can cause the door to rust when it is exposed to weather. You'll want to sand the panel that is damaged and apply a new coat of paint for protection.

When you run into damage that you can't seem to repair on your own, then you know it's time to contact a local overhead door service company for assistance. They can handle the entire repair for you.

Your Garage Doesn't Have To Be Your Security Weak Link

I'm Megan Moore. I have always been very security-conscious ever since I woke up to find an intruder rummaging through my belongings in my living room. I never wanted this to happen again, so I purchased a state-of-the-art security system. But despite the security measures that I put in place, my home was still burglarized. The problem was with my garage door. Somehow, a burglar was able to get the code to the garage door opener. I realized that my garage was my weak link and I set out to learn everything I could about garage doors and garage door security.
